Behind The Shutter

Shutter Shades Inc. is a private eyewear and apparel company started in 2007 by Todd Wilkerson. On September 14, 2007, ShutterShadesonline.com officially launched online and on that same day the Classic edition Shutter Shades were featured in the nationally-circulated magazine US Weekly. The very first product offering from the brand was the Classic edition frame in six colors.

Orders for Shutter Shades immediately came in on that first day. In the following year, the Classic edition frame was featured in other notable magazines such as Blender, Maxim and Rolling Stone as well as on the fashion-forward website Hypebeast.com. Because the company started online, it benefited from the increasing popularity of online retail as well as from the many photos and viral videos posted online on social networks of numerous celebrities and its early customers wearing and promoting the shades.

In January of 2008, Wilkerson and five representatives of Shutter Shades traveled to Barcelona, Spain to showcase the brand at the Bread and Butter Trade Show for Select Brands. They exhibited in the Sport and Street section, showcasing the Classic edition as well as two other styles, the 2.0 edition and the Metal edition. While there, they were featured on the local Barcelona news and was later one of a few brands featured in the official 2008 Bread & Butter Bulletin magazine that was released shortly after the trade show. This exhibition helped to establish a global presence of Shutter Shades eyewear and the brand.

On February 14, 2008, the company formally incorporated in Los Angeles, California.

During that same month, Shutter Shades Inc. showcased the brand at Project in the MAGIC Trade Show in Las Vegas, Nevada in connection with Los Angeles, California based apparel brand Local Celebrity.

During the spring of 2008, Shutter Shades linked up with Kanye West and his official merchandise company, Bravado International, to sell Shutter Shades as a merchandise item on each show of West's "Glow In The Dark Tour" in the USA.

Style: The early success of the brand has been attributed to its popularity in the hip-hop and fashion scenes. The brand was also embraced by celebrities, hipsters, skaters and other street subcultures.
